Sleeve Gastrectomy Sacramento

What is Sleeve Gastrectomy?

The Lap Band® is the least invasive surgical weight loss procedure, performed using a minimally invasive/laparoscopic technique.

Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass is considered the "GOLD STANDARD" in bariatric surgery and is the procedure most widely used for patients who are seeking significant weight loss.

The Sleeve Gastrectomy is a restrictive procedure in which 85% of the stomach is removed, leaving a cylindrical or sleeve/banana-shaped stomach. With this surgery, the outlet valve and the nerves to the stomach remain intact and, while the stomach is drastically reduced in size, its function is essentially preserved. The additional benefit of this surgery is there is a hormone "ghrelin" which is produced in the portion of the stomach that is removed. This hormone is felt to be responsible for the feeling of "hunger." With the reduction or elimination of this hormone, a person’s feeling of hunger is greatly reduced.

The Sleeve Gastrectomy reduces the quantity of food a person can eat after surgery and places fewer restrictions on the type of food a person can eat over the RNY bypass. This procedure also does not involve any bypass of the intestinal tract and can be performed using a minimally invasive/laparoscopic technique.

It is important to note that the Sleeve Gastrectomy is still considered a new procedure so may not be covered by your insurance plan.

The Sacramento Bariatric Surgery team at Methodist Hospital offers the Sleeve Gastrectomy procedure to patients overcoming obesity throughout the Sacramento region.
