Mercy's Family Practice Residency Program at Mercy's Methodist Hospital of Sacramento was established in 1994 to teach physicians in training - residents - primary healthcare skills. The Family Practice Residency Program resides on the Methodist Hospital campus for several reasons, among which are:

  • the benefits residents receive from the broad patient base located in the southern suburbs of Sacramento
  • the strong community presence
  • a sophisticated educational foundation

The Family Practice Residency Program at Mercy's Methodist Hospital has received the highest level of residency accreditation and is nationally recognized for excellence in training, quality of residents and patient care. The program features an ethnically and culturally diverse faculty who strive to live up to their reputation of being the most supportive and approachable possible, plus an equally diverse resident and patient population. The medical team is dedicated to teamwork, professionalism, mutual support and wellness.

The primary focus of the Residency Program is quality education, with a priority of caring for the underserved - a reflection of the healthcare mission of Dignity Health and the Sacramento area Mercy hospitals. A core group of faculty teaches the residents within various settings, providing much needed medical care for the community. Many patients, including the underserved, access the healthcare our residents provide at locations including:

Some statistics about our program:

  • Percentage of the graduates who stayed in California: 92%
  • Percentage of the graduates who stayed in northern California: 75%
    (LAST 5 YEARS): 100%

Graduates start solo practices in rural and urban settings, are actively recruited into medical groups, become hospitalists, do international work, go on to fellowship training, become academic faculty in family medicine and much more. They are capable to practice however they choose.

Excerpt from Residency Program Director’s Graduation Speech 2012:
"In this community it is our hospitals and our residents that care for the most vulnerable - something I do not think should be overlooked or understated. Many start down the path of medicine with altruistic, optimistic, perhaps lofty goals of caring for the undeserved. Somewhere along the line they become jaded, or perhaps economically enticed, and the calling that brought them to medicine becomes lost. The reason medical students choose this program, the reason our faculty work here, the reason I am here is because Dignity Health has not lost sight of this path. We work here because we are proud to take care of those others might neglect. We have stayed true to our mission. Our residency is a product of Dignity Health’s commitment to train our future primary care work force, and to treat those most in need. This is truly something to be proud of."
